Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are two types of indirect fillings. An indirect filling means that it is fabricated in a dental lab out of gold, porcelain, or resin before being cemented into the mouth. An inlay is a filling that fits into the grooves of a chewing surface. An onlay is larger than an inlay and extends over the chewing surface, as well as over one or more of the tooth’s cusps.

When having an inlay or onlay placed at Dental Solutions New York, you can expect to be given a local anesthetic that numbs the treatment area. Then, our dentist will remove any decayed, damaged tooth structure and prepare your tooth to receive the inlay or onlay. Once the tooth has been prepared, a dental impression will be taken of your mouth.
Inlays and onlays take one or more appointments for placement. Because of this, you may be fitted with a temporary restoration to wear while your custom fabricated inlay or onlay is fabricated at a dental lab. When the restoration is complete, then it will be cemented in place.

Between your first and second appointments, you will be fitted with a temporary restoration. While wearing this temporary restoration you will temporarily need to avoid chewing on that side of your mouth in order to prevent the veneers from being damaged or dislodged. Once your permanent inlay or onlay has been placed, you can resume your normal routine of brushing and flossing daily, and scheduling regular dental exams.
